Junior Brown at the Bottleneck on September 19

    Junior Brown, once a member of the Billy Spears Band, returns to Lawrence September 19 for a gig at the Bottleneck. Back when he was playing with Spears, he hadn't developed his distinctive guit-steel instrument and was known as Jim until the other bandmembers dubbed him “Junior.”

 

Topeka Jazz Workshop Band kicks off 40th edition concert

Wichita appearance by Martina McBride is off

  

    A push by WalterWalk developers to lure country music star Martina McBride to the downtown Wichita development appears to have failed. After being courted for months, the singer has pulled the plug on talks according to her publicist.

    “I was just told by management that this is not happening and there are no more discussions, “ said Kathy Best of Nashville in an email to the Wichita Business Journal . Best says McBride's representatives won't comment further about why talks have stopped.

Melissa Etheridge joins other stars for "Stand Up To Cancer"

    More than a dozen of the world's most accomplished female recording artists, including KMHOF Inductee Melissa Etheridge , have joined together for “Just Stand Up,” an unprecedented charity single in support of the Stand Up To Cancer Fundraising Campaign. Funds generated by the single, produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Antonio "L.A." Reid, will support cancer research. "Just Stand Up" will be available exclusively on iTunes beginning Sept. 2. Also set to perform on the single are Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Mary J. Blige, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Sheryl Crow, Fergie, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, LeAnnRimes and Carrie Underwood.

  


    The tune will also be performed during the live "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon set to air simultaneously on ABC, CBS and NBC on Sept. 5 (Daily Variety, May 28). Big Three network news anchors Charles Gibson, Katie Couric and Brian Williams will appear on the telethon and offer reports on the latest developments in cancer research. Laura Ziskin, a cancer survivor, will produce the telecast.

Rapper S.J. Hazim at the Kansas Black Expo on August 30

    Former marine S.J. Hazim, who performs around Topeka as 7 Grand, will perform with his group Strongtower August 30 as part of the Kansas Black Expo at the Gage Park Amphitheater. Bluegrass Hall of Famer Mike O'Roark has passed away

    Kansas City bluegrass musician Mike O'Roark, a Bluegrass Hall of Fame inductee, passed away last week. Mike O'Roark and the Freeborn Men recorded several albums and entertained thousands over the years. Click here: www.kansascity.com .

 

Moreland and Arbuckle head to Iraq with Bluzapalooza

    Wichita blues duo Moreland and Arbuckle will be in Iraq October 26-November 7 as part of the Bluzapalooza tour, entertaining US troops. Created by blues producers Steve Simon and John Hahn and presented by Armed Forces Entertainment, this twelve day tour will also feature Shemekia Copeland, Michael Burke, Deanna Bogart, Zac Harmon, and Tony Braunagel and The Bluzapalooza All-Star Band.

 

Bar Natasha shuts doors on September 20

    Piano cabaret lounge Bar Natasha , 1911 Main Street in Kansas City , MO , is closing after September 20, the day of the downtown venue's last performance.

    “Business has been a bit slow, but after five years we're ready to try something new,” said co-owner J.D. Mann. The decision will allow his partner Missy Koonce to concentrate more on her singing and acting career. Koonce said the decision to close came down to the economy.

    Emporia DJ S.C. Dixon is back on the scene with a new gig, at The Noose. Dixon has been working the clubs in Emporia since 1977.

Martina McBride tour and album info

  
    Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductee Martina McBride will host a ceremony recognizing the special honorees and off-camera winners from this year's Academy of Country Music Awards which were held in May in Las Vegas . The ceremony will take place on September 17 in Nashville at the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. Recipients of the ACM's Special Award include Bill Anderson, Dick Clark, Brenda Lee, The Oak Ridge Boys and the late Fred Rose, Conway Twitty and Porter Wagoner. The winners of the musician, producer and audio engineer awards will also be honored.

    Martina continues to work on her next album, which will be released in January or February of 2009. Clif Major puts cancer in the past

    Wichita guitarist Clif Major claims he has beaten the cancer that has dominated his life the past few years. J.D. Andrew profiled in article

    Gypsum, Kansas native J.D. Andrew engineered actor Billy Bob Thornton's 2007 album Beautiful Door . Andrew is a 1992 graduate of Southeast of Saline Jr.-Sr. High School who attended Kansas State University, and won a Grammy award on a path that has brought him back to Kansas as a member of Thornton 's band The Boxmasters. Terry Queitt Band competes in International Blues Challenge

    The Terry Queitt Band will represent the Wichita Blues Society in Memphis for the 2009 International Blues Challenge. First prize includes: $1000 for expenses to Memphis, opening for Bernard Allison at Sam's Place August 21, a slot in the WBS Fall Blues Crawl, a featured slot at the 2009 WBS Blues Ball, and they will play at the 2009 CQ Blues Fest in Sedan, KS.

    Second Place went to Jimmy Lewin and the Kingtones from Salina , Third Place was To Go Box from Wichita . The other bands competing were Made From Scratch, Mead Street Reunion and Willie D. and the Rockteers.

    Topeka has a new blues society. Information about the Topeka Blues Society is available at the organization's website www.topekabluessociety.org . Anyone interested in joining, can also call Suki at 785-234-4317.

    Congratulations to Kansas City 's Celtic-rock band The Elders . It has officially been ten years since they started performing together in 1998. Their first gis was at The Hurricane in Westport of a Tuesday night, playing to a crowd of mostly family and friends. Much has happened since then. The band is in demand all over this country and in Ireland . The band's next trip to Ireland will be February 20-27, 2009.

More details on "Elvis Christmas Duets" album with Martina McBride

    We mentioned last week that Martina McBride will be appearing on an upcoming album of duets with Elvis. We can now reveal that it'll be a Christmas album called Elvis Presley Christmas Duets . The CD will be out October 14 and will also feature Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Wynonna Judd, Sara Evans, Amy Grant, Anne Murray and others singing with the King of Rock and Roll. Sony BMG is releasing the album in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. Although Presley recorded only 20 Christmas songs, his holiday albums have sold more than 25 million copies in the US alone.

 

New releases by local bands

    Area bands are really getting into vinyl these days. The Pines have reissued their self-titled album in a limited edition of 500 12-inchers. This Tuesday the Architects are releasing a white vinyl edition of their album Vice. Look for either or both online or in Kansas City area stores.

 

Shooting Star updates

    Shooting Star 's lead singer Ronnie Platt gave fans a treat in his hometown of Chicago when he joined his old band onstage: Click here: ARRA :: All Access Magazine :: It's All About The Music

    Janet Jameson reports that she's really enjoying being a part of Shooting Star, but she wants everyone to know that she's still a part of Rock Paper Scissors, and they continue to play every Tuesday on the Plaza in KC at the Intercontinental Hotel. She's also been playing with the recently reunited Nation. While she wasn't a part of the band back in the late 60s and early 70s, she played on a lot of the same bills. Janet was in Morningstar back then. Nation member Chuck Boyd has announced that he's moving to Newfoundland , so the band will be playing out a few more gigs to the end of the year (or until Chuck's house sells).

Wichita Blues Challenge this Saturday August 10

    Don't forget the Wichita Blues Society 's annual Blues Challenge this coming Sunday, August 10, at Sam's Place, 5521 W. Kellogg. The music starts at 4 o'clock, and KEYN Radio has donated an HD2 radio for a fundraising raffle. The WBS is looking for a blues band to represent Wichita at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis early next year. The group's annual blues crawl is also upcoming.

     Reggie & The Full Effect announced their farewell tour in June, and for some reason the tour does not stop in the band's hometown of Kansas City . Band founder James Dewees has been offered the keyboard job with My Chemical Romance. He's been sitting in with them for the past two years.     Singer-songwriter Clayton Senne, whose father co-founded Topeka 's Exceptions and whose mother and stepfather are longtime members, returned to the area this past weekend from his home in Florida .     Saturday marked the beginning of the end for Topeka 's Judy Coder & Pride of the Prairie as the quartet has decided to disband after upcoming shows in Branson and Oklahoma .     Also calling it quits is Wichita 's Moonlight Drive , a Doors tribute band, who played their final show Saturday night at the Cotillion. Guitarist Phil Martin is moving to Florida to pursue a doctorate in psychology. Keyboardist Dustin Lentz says the rest of the band members are ready to tackle something new after seven years together. According to Lentz, “We're pursuing some different musical things.”
